Stanley Kubrick is an internationally renowned filmmaker, known for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Dr. Strangelove, among other masterpieces. Born in 1928, Kubrick was interested in film and photography from a young age and, by his death in 1999, had become one of the greatest and influential filmmakers in cinematic history. His groundbreaking cinematography, sometimes-controversial subject matter, and keen integration of music made for memorable, impactful films. While writing, directing, and producing throughout his lifetime, he utilized many unique traits that made most of his films distinctly his. These traits can influence modern-day productions of any kind, even things like music videos, commercials, or short films. In part one of this two-part post, here are several aspects of Kubrick’s filmmaking process to keep in mind when planning your next Orlando video production:
Use Humor for Any Subject
When you think of Kubrick, “humor” may not be the first descriptor that comes to mind. Still, he had a unique ability to tackle deep subjects with humor, such as in Dr. Strangelove. It is a comedic, political satire about the Cold War and USA/USSR relations. Other films, including A Clockwork Orange, Lolita, and The Shining, similarly touch upon sensitive subjects and social messages through the use of dark humor. This serves as a good reminder that many corporate subjects can be handled in a light-hearted way, including commercials, product tutorials, and training videos.
Take Risks and Experiment
2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most influential films of all time, thanks to its intense plot, ground-breaking visual effects, stunning cinematography, and hair-raising musical score. With this film, Kubrick was not afraid to take risks and experiment with doing what he wanted. In fact, Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, the co-writer of the screenplay, designed the film to make things confusing and leave questions unanswered. This tactic immersed the audience in the film and, once the credits rolled, kept them from knowing all the answers. For Orlando video productions intended for marketing use, of course, your content should be clear and self-explanatory. However, you should keep in mind that you are free to experiment and explore, viewing your organization from different angles and points of view.
Make the Mundane Mean Something
Taking risks or using humor are two tactics that can help you look for the unique in something completely normal or mundane. Kubrick often included shots that, on paper, do not mean much and would likely not elicit an emotional response. However, portraying those ideas in a unique way can transform their ability to reach and impact the audience. For example, a child named Danny rides his bike throughout the hotel corridors in The Shining, which is normally a mundane event. However, Kubrick found a way to portray it uniquely, in such a way that the long tracking sequence is eerie and uncomfortable. Take your ideas and try to transform them in such a way that they mean elicit a response from the audience.
